{"id":36,"date":"2021-08-25T01:22:07","date_gmt":"2021-08-25T01:22:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thegriggs.org\/david\/?page_id=36"},"modified":"2021-09-02T04:08:16","modified_gmt":"2021-09-02T04:08:16","slug":"writing","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/thegriggs.org\/david\/writing\/","title":{"rendered":"Writing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Some details about my fiction writing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I started trying to write fiction when I was 12 years old, when I convinced my parents to buy me a secondhand typewriter, on which I wrote my first (unpublishable!) novel <em>Atlantia.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my teens and early 20s I had some success in the science fiction field, with a number of short stories published in professional magazines and anthologies, as detailed below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1975, I was extremely fortunate to attend the Writer\u2019s Workshop held by Ursula Le Guin at Booth Lodge, an amazing and transformative experience. The same year, I was in charge of organising the Hugo Awards at the World SF Convention held in Melbourne that year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a bibliography of the stories I sold at that period:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u201cA Song Before Sunset\u201d : in&nbsp;<em>Beyond Tomorrow<\/em>&nbsp;ed. This story has been described by Bruce Gillespie, editor of&nbsp;<em>SF Commentary<\/em>&nbsp;as \u2018one of the top ten Australian SF stories ever published\u2019.<\/li><li>In 1976 I also had two short fantasy novels for&nbsp;pre-teens published by Cassell Australia. These were&nbsp;<em>Halfway House<\/em>, and a sequel,&nbsp;<em>Shadows<\/em>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Since retiring a few years ago, I\u2019ve returned to my old love of writing fiction. I\u2019ve written more than 90 short stories in a variety of genres since 2011, as well as working hard on a science fiction novel.
